National Governor’s Association

The National Governors Association (NGA) is an organization consisting of the governors of the states, territories, and commonwealths of the United States.  Its mission is to act as the collective voice for governors on matters of national policy as well as allowing governors to share best practices.   Early childhood education took center stage at the National Governors Association Winter meeting in February 2017 and continues to hold a priority as our own Governor Walz holds a seat on the Education and Workforce Committee.

The NGA Center for Best Practices develops innovative solutions to the most challenging public policy issues facing the states.   Minnesota applied for and received a small grant for support and technical assistance from the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices to improve early care and education workforce, specifically around the issue of compensation. Minnesota creates a workgroup appointed by the Children’s Cabinet to provide recommendations at the state and local level regarding the funding needed and potential funding mechanisms to support a sustainable early childhood workforce compensated at a level commensurate with their educational attainment and the responsibilities of their position.
